When they were young, they were both locked up in The Tower of London, so had something in common. Unfortunately Dudley was a married man. His first wife, Amy, actually died in suspicious circumstances (she was found dead at the bottom of the stairs at their home), although she was suffering from a terminal illness. This led to difficulties with the Queen and Dudley's 'relationship', so she distanced herself from him for a while. In 1578 he married a widow named Lettice Knollys, who was actually related to the Queen, and Elizabeth was furious when she found out they had married. But she forgave him and always stayed fond of him. He died a some years before her, but when Elizabeth died, mementoes of his were found amongst her most treasured and closest possessions.
