Jefferson's last words were, "Is it July 4th?

I think that they always admired each other but their personal relationship varied over the years. They became close friends when they served together in the Continental Congress and worked to bring about independence in 1776. Later on, When Adams was vice president and Jefferson was secretary of state under George Washington, they had very different ideas about the proper relationship between the states and the federal government and how to interperet the constitution. Those differences became sharper when they ran against each other for president in 1800. Adams was elected president and Jefferson vice president. In 1804 they each ran again and the campaign was very bitter and very personal. This time Jefferson won but their friendship was at an end. They did not communicate with each other for many years afterwards but eventually they did start writing again. Eventually they were able, to some extent, to restore their friendship. It is a remarkable coincindence that they both died on July 4, 1826. Adams' last words were, "Jefferson still lives." Michael Montagne

Yes and no. During their time together in the Continental Congress when they worked together to get independence declared they became very good friends. That friendship began to unravel when Adams was vice president and Jefferson was secretary of state under Washington. It fell apart completely when Adams was president and Jefferson was vice president. I don't know if hatred is the right word but they came to very thouroughly dislike each other, especially after Jefferson defeated Adams in the election of 1804. But, many years later, when they were both old men and long out of politics, they began to write one another again and were able to reestablish the friendship they once had. Michael Montagne

Why did thomas Jefferson call the 1800 revolution?

The election between Jefferson and Adams is often referred to as the "Revolution of 1800" because the election was in many ways like a war. Adams and Jefferson were basically at war with each other in order to become president. When Jefferson won and Adams lost, it was like a revolution. Adams was like the "ruler" and Jefferson the "underdog". Having the new guy win was in fact very much like a revolution.

Which founding fathers died within hours of each other?

Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died the same day, July 4, 1826.

Why did Jefferson and Adams have issues as friends?

They had issues for a number of reasons. First, they had opposing political beliefs about the role and nature of government. Adams was for a strong central government. Jefferson was for a weaker one that left more governmental power to the individual states. Adams believed government should be left to the care of wiser men than the general public. Jefferson believed government by the general public was exactly what the revolution was all about in the first place. They came to be leaders of the two different political parties, Federalist and Republican, that sprang up among the citizens and politicians of the time. This led to opposing political factions forming, each wanting the other out of the way and each looking to Adams or Jefferson to lead them. They both let these political differences become personal dislikes. This was because they began to see each other as turning his back on the ideals that led to the new country in the first place. Another issue that arose was that Jefferson, along with James Madison, was working behind Adams' back to unseat Adams as president, even though Jefferson was Adams's Vice-president. Jefferson had written a letter to a friend of his that was critical of Adams's political views. The letter somehow became public to the embarassment of Adams. Adams was so angry he refused to speak to Jefferson for many years. Even Abigail Adams was furious with Jefferson and wrote him telling him that he was two-faced. Jefferson's behind the scenes actions against Adams were successful, and Jefferson beat Adams in the next presidential election after Adams had served only one term. Adams left office without staying to see Jefferson sworn in. John Adams was a difficult man to get along with. He even disliked his staunchest fellow Federalist, Alexander Hamilton. It is was no surprise that Adams and Jefferson eventually had their falling out, since Adams was hardly liked by anyone around him, except Abigail. In fact, while Adams was president, he relied more on her than on his own cabinet members for advice. The surprising thing was that the two managed to reconcile their friendship later on.

Was John Marshall appointed by Thomas Jefferson?

No. John Marshall was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Jefferson's immediate predecessor, President John Adams, in 1801. Marshall and Jefferson had completely different political ideologies and little respect for each other, so Jefferson would never have nominated Marshall.

Did Thomas Jefferson and John Adams become enemies and then friends again?

Yes, sort of. Jefferson and Adams were friends, but they had different ideas about how the government should be run and whether the states or federal government should have more power. They became enemies when they were both active in politics. In 1796, Adams was elected President and Jefferson was elected Vice-President, even though they belonged to different political parties. In 1800, Jefferson was elected President and Adams was badly defeated. Adams tried to pack the Judicial Branch (courts) with judges who thought the same way he did. Jefferson got angry. Later, when they had both retired from politics, they began writing letters to each other and worked things out. Both men died on the same day, July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after they signed the Declaration of Independence.

How were Jefferson and Franklin and Adams similar?

The three of them couldn't have been less similar. The only thing they agreed on was independence. When they were together in France Adams and Jefferson shared rooms for awhile. In letters to his wife Adams complains that Jefferson has piles of books all over the room. He also complains about Franklin as the party guy and how he would party all night. Jefferson complains about Franklin not learning French. Eventually Adams and Jefferson later will quit talking to each other. Politically Adams is a federalist and Jefferson is an anti federalist, so in their presidential years they hated each other. Just before each man died they did meet and mended fences to some extent, but they died on the same day. As Jefferson was dying he is reported as saying that he had outlived Adams. Actually he died first and Adams died later that evening.
