Ulysses Grant never heard of soccer, for the excellent reason that it did not yet exist. Civil War soldiers played a game that had evolved called Baseball. A Union general, Abner Doubleday, wrote down the rules and is often credited with inventing the game, but just made a list of the existing rules. There was the game of Rugby, which was evolving into the game of American football. The first College Football game was in 1869.
