Yes, alphabets evolved over time. One improvement was the introduction of vowels. Earlier alphabets had only consonants, so one could not distinguish between homonyms except by context.

The earliest alphabets tended to be more pictorial and representative, and the letters were difficult to form. Over time the letters became simpler and less stylized--easier to cut into stone. In many cases the number of letters was reduced.

The Roman alphabet spread across much of the world, and is now the most popular. The word "alphabet" itself is formed from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, Alpha and Beta.
