An analog signal is a continuous-time signal and takes any real value within its operating range.

For example, the voltage across a light dependant resistor (LDR) is an analog signal that varies according to how much light it is exposed to. It is analog in that for any real value of time there is a real value of voltage which represents the light exposure of the LDR at that moment in time (ideally), so it is a continuous-time signal which gives a real value output. If the voltage is 1.2V at 0 seconds and 5.4V at 1 second our analog signal will have shown this change in voltage in real-time.

A digital signal is a discrete-time signal and takes a discrete value withing its operating range. This means that the signal is digitised (quantised; meaning that the signal value is rounded up or down according to the resolution) at periodic points in time, which is defined as the sampling rate measured in samples per second.

For example, using the same idea as before we can take a digital signal of the voltage across the LDR. Every digital system is different so for the sake of demonstration lets say this system is accurate to 0.5 volts and the sampling rate is 1Hz (1 sample per second). Our signal will only ever be accurate to 0.5 volts and 1 second, so if the voltage at 2 seconds was 6.3V then the digital signal will show it to be 6.5V. If the voltage drops to 1.2V at 2.1 seconds our digital signal will still show it to be 6.5V because it won't log the voltage again until 3 seconds have passed.

The above examples make digital signals seem less desirable, but this is certainly not the case. Digital systems are typically a great deal more accurate (if needed) than the example given, and because of the quatisation of the signal it is very good for reducing the noise in the system (if your quantisation level is accurate to 0.5V and the noise in the system random averaging at 0.1V the noise will be reduced in a digital system compared to an analog system). That's just one example of the advantages that make digital systems desirable.

Analog was used with first-generation cellular technology, and digital cellular was the second generation and beyond.

Cellular, or mobile, phone systems use, in part, wireless radio transmissions to carry conversations and other information. An analog system uses something like FM radio technology, where a carrier signal of a defined frequency is modulated by imposing upon it the analog (continuously varying) voice patterns on the transmit side and then decoding the signal at the receive end, where the receiver earpiece is caused to vibrate at the same frequencies and proportional levels as did the source sound. With digital technology, the actual analog pattern of voices isn't directly layered onto the carrier. Rather, the voice signal, originating from the microphone in an analog pattern, is encoded by the telephone circuitry into a digital code of ones and zeroes. The carrier signal is modulated by the simple 1s/0s digital pattern. At the receiving end, the binary code is translated back into an analog representation, which drives the earpiece speaker, reproducing the original spoken sounds.

Why digital? Digital representations are much less subject to distortion or interference, although most of the signal, especially key portions, must be transmitted unaltered or the call will be lost. With digital, compression algorithms can be applied and transmissions can be encoded so that assigned frequencies can carry multiple calls within the same space. Now, despite the limited available bandwidth, so many more callers can be accommodated. And, the digital transmissions can easily include all kinds of digitized data, such as text messages, maps, photographs, and more.
