If the yarn is spun in the direction of the fibers a smoother yarn is produced than if the yarn is spun perpendicular to the fibers.

Carding removes tangles in wool fibers but does not fully align the fibers so they are all going in exactly the same direction. Most may be going in one direction but there will always be some going off in their own direction. If the carded fiber is spun with most of the fibers going in the direction of spinning (ie toward the spinning wheel), it will produce a more compact, smoother yarn. If it is spun with most of the fibers perpendicular to the direction of spin, it will produce a fluffier, airier yarn. However, because there is always some haphazard arrangement of fibers that have been carded, carded wool will always produce fluffier yarn than combed wool. Fluffy or airy yarn is generally best suited for knitting.

Combing is much more labor intensive. Fine toothed combs are used to straighten and align each individual fiber parallel to the direction of spinning AS the fiber is being spun. Unlike carding, combing cannot be done ahead of time. This produces a very smooth, very compactly spun yarn which is best suited for weaving.

When cotton or another fabric is "combed," the shortest, additional fibers of a batch are removed. The result produces high-quality, extra soft yarns with excellent strength and softness. Combed cotton uses finer fiber than carded yarns and is more regular and expensive than carded yarn.

Carded wool is used for woolen spinning while carded wool is used for worsted spinning. Carding detangles the wool and helps to remove debris, but it doesn't really align all the fibers nearly so much as combing does.

What is carding of yarn?

Since one cannot card yarn, I assume what you're talking about is yarn spun from wool that has been carded, as opposed to combed or simply not carded at all. Carding is the process of brushing the wool prior to spinning to remove debris and tangles and to orient the individual hairs in more or less the same direction. Carded fibers are typically spun into woolen yarns (which are soft and fluffy) and combed fibers are typically spun into worsted yarns (which are smoother and harder).

How angora rabbits wool made into fabric?

What is the difference between carded yarn and combed yarn?

Carding partially aligns the fibers and forms them into a thin web that is brought together as a soft, very weak rope of fibers called a carded sliver. Carding is when short wire teeth remove trash and neps (entangled clumps of short, underdeveloped fibers). Combing is used if long-staple fibers are to be spun. It produces a yarn that is superior to a carded yarn in smoothness, fineness, evenness, and strength. Combing aligns fibers in a parallel arrangement & also removes short fibers so fibers in the combed sliver will be more uniform in length.

What is the Difference between 100 percent cotton and 100 percent combed cotton?

Combed cotton is softer and finer than ordinary cotton. Impurities in combed cotton were brushed out after the initial spinning.

Where can you get a wool quilt combed?

You would not want to get a wool quilt "combed," as that would ruin the quilt! You may be thinking of having washed raw wool carded, which is a process of passing wool fibers through the teeth of heavy tools called "combs," that separates and alligns the tangled fibers. But that process is done long before the wool is made into a batt or spun into thread and woven into fabric used in a quilt.

Is Icelandic wool the same as new wool?

Icelandic wool may indicate that the fleece originated in Iceland, or that the fleece was combed, carded and spun there. New wool is wool that has not been used before. The two terms are not mutually exclusive, or interdependent.

What is ring spun carded and combed yarn and what are their uses?

There are three commercial methods of spinning yarn into the product we see at the store. They are called Ring Spun, Rotor Spun, and Friction Spun. Each method produces different results in the yarn. The full question, ring spun carded and combed, refers to the fiber preparation method of carding (brushing) and combing the fibers prior to spinning, in order to form a softer yarn which is best for soft knit items. The fibers are spun in a ring arrangement making it unnecessary for extra plies, so the yarn is much finer. There is also a downside to using ring spun, because the very process that causes it to be softer also causes the yarn to be more prone to breaking.

What is the past tense of comb?

The past tense of comb is "combed" We combed the woods looking for the lost child. I combed my hair this morning You combed the want-ads for jobs yesterday, let's go play today.
