What is the length of a piece of string?

No-one can know for sure, because there are assumed to be a ridiculously big number of stars in the universe.

Proxima Centauri, our nearest star other than the sun, is 4.2 LY away.

Sirius A and B are 8.6 LY away

There is no specific term used for the distance between two stars. We would typically measure this distance in light years or in parsecs, but the distance would be different between any pair of stars.

The nearest star to our own Sun is the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, which is 4.2 light years away.

That's 24,689,699,200,000 miles.

In globular clusters, the stars are somewhat closer together, but they are all at different distances.

It is hard to give an average; the nearest star from us has a distance of 4.2 light-years, the next stars are only slightly farther, so the average seems to be some 4-5 light-years. But closer to the center of the Milky Way, the stars are much closer together.

In the case of a double star, the distance between two stars can be a fraction of an astronomical unit - i.e., a few light-minutes. Otherwise, the distance between the nearest stars in our neighborhood is typically a few light-years, but in some places - near the galactic center, or in globular clusters - stars are much closer to each other.

A few light-years to the nearest stars. The nearest known star (other than the Sun itself) is at a distance of about 4.2 light-years.

Average distance between stars in the solar system?

There is only one star in our solar system, and that is our sun.

What two pieces of information would you need in order to measure the masses of stars in an eclipsing binary system?

the time between eclipses and the average distance between the stars

How does the distance between planets compare to the distance of stars?

The distance between stars is a couple of order of magnitudes higher than the distance between planets. To put this into perspective, the distance between earth and the sun is 8 light-minutes and the distance between other planets doesn't go further than a few light-hours. On the other hand, the distance between our sun and the nearest star (alpha centauri) is 4.4 light-years. This means that this distance is about 38544 larger than the distance between planets.Beyond that, the distance between stars can be extremely high: a star on the other side of our galaxy will be about 100000 light-years away from us. The distance will keep rising as we move on to different galaxies, then different galaxy clusters, the super clusters and then, finally, the width of the universe.

What is the stars in bootes distance from earth?

Each star has a different distance.

What is the distance between the earth and the big dipper?

There is no single number that describes a distance between the earth and that, or any other constellation. The big dipper is a pattern of stars visible in the skies of the northern hemisphere. Its seven stars are not actually associated with each other and are at widely differing distances from the earth, ranging from 58 to 124 light years.
