First keep in mind that bicycels are generally made from several different materials, so even an aluminium or a carbon bicycle is likely to have some aprts on it that might rust.

Rust is something only metals containing iron can do, so aluminium parts can't rust. But they can suffer the same reaction, but it'll be called corrosion, or oxidation.

Carbon parts are pretty much safe even from that.

What happens when you leave your bike outside in the rain with rust?

Bikes generally begin to rust at the chain and gears. This is because these parts are not painted and they are exposed to water and dirt. You should try to clean these and grease them as often as possible. Wheel hubs and the chrome on the wheels also rust. Then you will begin to see other "chrome" parts such as handle bars and pedal arms show signs of flecks of rust.
