It is common to say that a bird "learns to fly", but there is no "learning" involved. Indeed, the first flight of any bird is a part of what is called maturation, developmental changes in neuromuscular systems. Even though fledglings flap about as though they were getting ready and practicing to fly, studies have been conducted that restricts the use of wings from birth. The result of these studies found that these birds with restricted movement of their wings will fly just the same as their kin in the control group.
