People should have the option. Some people are more comfortable in boys only or girls only school and some people are not. Having a choice is important.

Having boys and girls attend separate schools is often called "Gender Apartheid".

People support such gender segregation in schools for reasons that include religious belief, social propriety, morality, convenience and protection.

The whole crux of the matter is that many people believe that boys and girls are different and require specific facilities and teaching methods proper to their sex.

Many religions teach, or at least used to teach, that boys and girls should not be attending school together, especially during adolescence when children are curious and not yet disciplined in the mind and body. They fear that children will be in an occasion of sin when in such intimate quarters for hours at a time with members of the opposite sex. They wish to avoid such a situation until children are mature and ready for such involvement in legitimate circumstances. Separating them also helps to keep their minds on studies instead of each other, at least in the classroom. Religious arguments, therefore, insist that separating the sexes maintains decency, sacredness, modesty, female safety and promotes the family unit in the school as well as giving each gender a role model to emulate, for instance, the boys are usually taught by males, sometimes priests and brothers, and the girls by females, sometimes nuns and sisters.

Much of society's moral code and sense of propriety has been influenced by religion. Some, however, insist that besides religion there is a natural decency that must be respected. They consider that mixing genders in school would violate this natural decency. Their views are very much like the above and they too may cite gender roles and proper relations as reasons to keep the teachers the same sex as the students. It is also more convenient to sometimes provide one set of facilities rather than two in a teaching institution. Many schools used to be tailored to a specific sex in order to provide classes for established gender roles in society, such as homemaking for girls and manual skills for boys. In modern times such gender stereotyping is looked upon with disfavor though some people continue to defend the idea.

If you are referring to ancient Rome, yes, children did go toschool. However, ancient Rome did not have a formal system of education.

Children of humble background went to school until the age of 10-11. Teachers set up their own classes for a fee. They held the classes where they could, including in the back of shops separated for the rest of the shop by just a curtain and in the street. Elementary classes were run by a teacher called litterator. Children learnt to read and write and basic maths.

Children of people who could afford it went to better classes and continued on to the classes run by the grammaticus from the age of 9 to 12 until the age of 14-15. They improved their writing, learnt oration, expressive poetic reading and poetic analysis. Pupils were expected to have some knowledge of spoken and written Greek and classes were bilingual.

A small number of children went on to study with the rhetor. They studied rhetoric. If you wanted to study further, you went to Greece to study philosophy.

The children of rich people had private tuition at home.

Do you think there should be single-sex schools?

There are many single sex schools and they are even successful. There is no overall harm in such schools. Some families parents educate their daughters only in girls school so there is certainly a need for such schools. Obviously, you always have a choice to enroll as coed.

In what ways may the education provided for girls in different countries be less good than the education provided for boys?

As for girls they are not not provided with good education as compared to boys beacause parents dont want girls to be educated because if they would educate boys ,they would be able to carry on their bisuness.Other than this the infrastructure of schools of girls is poor and they are far distant. They aren't provided with transportation facilities.

Why might an all girls school be good for girls?

All girls school sounds quite conservative. If we talk about facts and figures, then almost 95% schools offer co-education. The rest of the 5% offers school education for girls only. The girls who receive education only with girls are not that sharp than those girls who studies in C0-education school. The scope of studies get widen in Co-education schools. The element of competition and learning increases due to gender clash.
