They grab the signal where it is strong and allow it to pass into say the cab of your car, I have installed them on all types of things like a basement window so it brings the signal into a dead zone. Most of these have gain, because of their size they grab alot of signal and shoot it into the dead zone.
Keep in mind, if there is no signal out there its not going to grab anything!
Be sure of the proper frequency as nextel IDEN is 800-900mhz and rest are higher.

I noticed a slight difference in mine but the downside is it needs to be plugged into an adapter to work which defeats the purpose of a cell phone in my mind because you are not mobile.
Depends on the area really� some places are just plain dead zones so I wouldn't get your hopes up too much that these devices will magically work in certain places.
