Some horses pace naturally. Standardbreds are raced as trotters, pacers (with hobbles) and free legged pacers. There are instances of pacing horses in a number of

breeds, even stories of mustangs that were natural pacers.

Some breeds of carriage horses were bred to pace.

Well this would depend on what you mean by pace. If you mean the gait then it's just a lateral gait that certain horses can preform naturally. If however you mean pace like what people do, it usually means the horse is excited or upset. They'll pace the fence line or in their stalls if they see something that they want or don't like. Some horses may also pace if they are not feeling well or are colicking.
