If the right person is viewing the question as it's been posted - some questions can be answered in seconds. Otherwise a question might sit unanswered for years !
If the question is simple enough, such as "Where did the American Revolution take place?", it is likely that someone has previously asked the question. So, a Supervisor who comes across your variant will merge it into the general question. Or, as it says above, you may just happen to be one of the people who luckily gets their question answered immediately. There are no statistics on the likelihood that a question will be answered by merger or by happenstance.

You shouldn't need to be a member to answer questions on the site. If the question is already answered, it could be protected, which would prevent some people from adding to it, but unanswered questions should be able to be answered by anyone.
Flagged Questions vs Featured QuestionsThe basic difference is that a flagged question has already been answered, although the answer needs improvement of sorts, and therefore gets "flagged." A featured question, on the other hand, is a question of interest that has not yet been answered (the minute a featured question does get answered, it automatically gets removed from the list of Featured questions).(For more information, see the Related questions.)
At the top of each question page - you'll see the words 'answered' and 'unanswered'. Clicking on the 'answered' link - provides a list of already solved questions, along with their answers. Clicking the 'unanswered' link - lists fresh questions waiting to be answered.
