Mice don't like cheese. It's a common myth because people used to say: "You have to set the trap with cheese, if you like to catch a mouse." But cheese wasn't referred to as the dairy product. It was figuratively used in a monetary sense as cheese lasts long and you'll always find a bit left in the pantry. In German, for example the word bacon is used instead.

Later, when most rodents were eradicated from human houses, people still heard the elders refer to the saying. But they took it literally and had no chance to correct their beliefs through personal experience.

In fact, mice are herbivores and while they will try everything, they prefer seeds and grains. If you read mouse trap instructions carefully, it says clearly to set the trap with peanut butter or bread. From personal experience I know that cheese doesn't work, while peanut butter does the trick.

They do not especially love cheese. A mouse's natural diet consists mainly of grains, with a few fruits or veggies here and there. A mouse would love a Cheerio more than he would love a slice of cheese.

No, mice like peanut butter the most because of the high amount of moisture in it.

Not really. Mice are herbivores and prefer grains, seeds, nuts and fruit over cheese. But they will try almost anything.

Why do people say that mice eat cheese when they actually don't?

The idea of mice eating cheese is likely a result of popular culture and cartoons, rather than scientific fact. Mice do not necessarily have an inherent preference for cheese and prefer sweeter foods. However, they are highly adaptable and opportunistic creatures that will eat almost anything they can find, including cheese if it is available and accessible to them.
