Films are usually edited either by the director or under his/her supervision. There's a term called 'Final Cut'. If a director has that in his contract, he can edit the film any way he pleases and the studio must accept it. If he does not have it, the studio can change the film if it's not satisfied with his version. Sam Peckinpah directed "Pat Garrett & Bill the Kid" (1973). He edited the film and turned his cut into MGM. The studio hated it and recut the film without his participation. Peckinpah actually sued to have his name taken off the film, but lost the case. He never directed another western. The film died a quick death at the boxoffice. In 2011, Turner Classic Movies televised a close approximation of Peckinpah's version. He did not live to see it, having died in 1984.
