What do French people decorate their house with on Christmas?

A good question, of course lights are used. One odd thing about French Christmas Customs is the following: Based on aarticle in the Hudson Dispatch in the sixties it is interesitng to note that Bells and Wreaths are NOT used,especially on Christmas Cards(they are used for New Year"s usually two bells clanging away) the reason is, somewhat oddly, that bells and wreaths are considere symbols of mourning and are thus inappropriate (they are used on Sympathy cards and prayer cards associated with Funeral homes-the name of the deceased in French Gothic lettering on a Bell with the life dates, if requested) The cars themselves were traditionally light blue and went throgh the pneumaticv post system(now Obsolete) getting off track I can imagine cards of this type made out for such celebreties as Edith Piaf or Sara Bernhardt would have a colector value. There are obviously diffrent types of funeral and/or sympathy cards as in the US. it is unusual the French consider Bells and wreaths, inthe abstracxt, morbiod, I could see flowers perhaps in this context.

The French are not great Christmas decorators. It is a religious festival and celebrated modestlyand in a dignified manner. Many villages turn on the Christmas lights ( the same coloured lights that have been up all year and are turned on for any festive occasion) there will generally be a Christmas Tree outside the mairie (the Town Hall) and many churches will bring out the Christmas tableau of Jesus and the Holy Family in the stable.

It is very common for families in France to buy a Christmas tree. It is decorated with shiny balls and garlands. Children would put their shoes right under the tree, to mark the place where "le Père Noël" ("Father Christmas") will put their presents during the night.

The Christmas tree is also a regular feature in shops and in streets.

They put there shoe outside by there door .So there parents put chocolate ,a little toy or something eles.And in the morning they wake up and get them from there door and open there shoe .
