never ever. Christians; per faith; are closer to Muslims than Hindus as both Muslims and Christians worship same God and have many common beliefs. In the historical ancient wars between the Byzantines (Christians) and the Pershians, Muslims were very sad and upset when the Byzantines were defeated and Sone verses of Quran are revealed to tell Muslims that the Byzantines will win in less than 10 years and it happened. Quran says (meaning English translation): The Byzantines have been defeated (2) In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome. (3) Within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice (4) In the victory of Allah. He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. (30:2-5)

On other occasion Quran says:

On other occasion Quran says:You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers (Muslims) [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers (Muslims) those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant. (5:82)

Catholic AnswerThe Holy Father (the Pope) is Our Blessed Lord's Vicar on earth. As such he is here to lead Christians to heaven. The Vatican is only there to carry out his wishes. Individual Christians are responsible to preach the Good News to everyone they meet, the responsibility of convert non-Christians thus is in their hands, on the Holy Father's. Secondly, the Church is not a military organization, as Our Blessed Lord said, "My kingdom is not of this world." Christians are not supposed to "threaten" anyone!

Why were Muslim rulers in India tolerant of Hindus?

Muslim rulers were never tolerant to Hindus. Most of them are famous for their Temple destruction activity. They have written their "Idol Breaking" activity with pride in their chronicles. All of them imposed "Jizya Tax" on Hindus. The Hindu Officials were often charged with false charges and forced to convert to Islam. Great-grandfather of Mohammad Iqbal, Pakistani poet was also converted to Islam in the same way. If the question is asking why Muslim Rulers did not forcibly convert Hindus when Hindus are clearly polytheists, the answer is that there were just too many Hindus and too many of them were in remote regions.

Why does it seem that many of the Christians who lose their faith convert to atheism but when Muslims Jews Hindus etc lose their faith many of them convert to Christianity?

First of all, many Christians really do convert to Islam. This is a two way trade - as it should be. In Israel, a very significant proportion of the population regarded as ethnically Jewish have abandoned their faith, becoming known as 'secular Jews'. And so it is also in other countries. In predominantly Islamic countries, it is often wiser for a former-Muslim atheist to say nothing, and thus not be known as an atheist. Only those who have adopted Christianity have any reason to make their new beliefs known (if they feel it is safe to do so). Few Christians would convert to Hinduism, because Christians are conditioned to certain assumptions, such as monotheism. On the other hand, due in part to colonialism, Hindus do not face this barrier.
