No, they will lay eggs even if they don't have a rooster. If you want chicks however you have to have a rooster.
Yes chickens doo. they start to lay eggs at about 6-8 weeks of age regardless if there is a rooster around or not. if you have a rooster you can not eat the eggs as they may be fertile. in extreem heat or cold chickens may not lay for a few weeks expectialy if the temprature changed quickley. chickens also go cluckey, wich means they want to become a mum. they will sit on the nest if the is a egg there or not and can die if it is very hot. it is then they must be taken of the nest by force. when nesting they can be quite frocious and peek you. they will also do this without a rooster. they are great to have around and make your home feel that little bit better.

Chickens can and do lay eggs without roosters. Roosters are needed for chickens to lay fertile eggs, from which new chickens can hatch. Unfertilized eggs never hatch, but they are sold as food.

No. You do not need a rooster for the hens to produce eggs. Hens will lay eggs with or without the rooster. The eggs you buy in the supermarkets are produced by hens who have never seen a rooster and never will. Roosters are needed for fertilization and are kept on farms to help protect the hens.

When did chickens start laying eggs?

Female chickens (hens) generally start laying eggs at around 20-24 weeks of age. Some breeds take longer. They don't need a rooster to lay eggs and if you are lucky they will lay an egg per day. Again this depends on the breed, with some chickens laying an egg every few days. They lay less over winter, when they are moulting or when they are stressed.
