It's much better for the drive train that way.
For first gear, Hold the clutch, press the gear down, accelerate slowly and leave the clutch gradually... For the rest of the gears, hold clutch, press the gear down accelerate a little more than the current moving speed and leave the clutch a little faster than before...

There is a little pedal on the left side by your foot. If you put your foot under it and raise up that will shift through the gears. You have to hold the clutch in between gears though. Hold down the clutch when sitting still or going too slow for that gear.
You should not have to hold the swith down, you probably have something broken inside the swith.I would replace it.
