Most automotive technicians find it easier to pull traverse mounted engines (most front wheel drive cars) and transmissions together. It takes just a little bit longer, but it pays off when you can pull the engine apart from the transmission in the clear. It also makes mating the engine and transmission easier and less prone to binding or accidently pinching a wire or vacuum hose between the transaxle and the engine.

You remove the axle nuts and a ball joint to remove the CV axles. Then you remove the shifter linkage. Remove the starter and all the other stuff that's hooked to the tranny. Then you place a jack under the engine. Remove all the bolts holding the tranny and the engine together. Now unhook a couple motor mounts, raise the car up, drop the engine down and slide the tranny out. You do not have to remove the motor to take the engine out. You simply need to take all the bolts out of the tranny that are going into the motor and then remove it from the motor with the motor in the car.
