Can you enter Ghana with Nigerian passport and then use American passport to return to USA?

I traveled earlier this year from the US to Ghana (to be safe, I secured a gratis Ghana visa in the Nigerian passport from a US-based Ghanaian embassy in advance. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any travels in the airport departing from the US). Had no problems at all entering Ghana (they asked for the Nigerian passport, then showed them the US passport to demonstrate my eligibility to reside there). Stayed in Ghana for a few weeks, but note - when I was trying to return back to the US, they told me I couldn't leave the airport without paying for a Ghana visa for my US passport (since I was returning back to the US)!

I was told this, which I'm not sure was correct and didn't make sense: While you are traveling throughout ECOWAS jurisdiction with an ECOWAS-member passport/ECOWAS passport, you can travel wherever freely. But when you are entering the region from outside ECOWAS and NOT entering your home country, you are required to either have a) a visa allowing you in that country (i.e., a Ghanaian visa in my US passport), or a visa from the country you are coming from that would allow you to return there (i.e., a US visa in my Nigerian passport). Basically, the guy was saying that for the direct US-Ghana travel, I had to have documents in ONE PASSPORT demonstrating my eligibility to be in the two countries. So, a US visa in the Nigerian passport and travel just on that, or a Ghana visa in the US passport.

But then my question is - why did I not have this problem entering? When I entered, the gratis visa was in my Nigerian passport!

Hoping my response doesn't befuddle the question even more!

To me though, that seems awfully redundant. Let me know if you are able to find out anything, as I am trying to travel to Ghana again soon and wondering!

I am a dual national as well (have both US and Nigerian passports) and will be traveling from the US to Ghana later this month via United Airlines. I just got off the phone with an airline customer service representative to ask this very question. Her response: Just bring both passports (don't need visa) and I should be fine. She mentioned that the airline recognizes that Nigerian passport holders (and other ECOWAS-country passport holders) don't need a visa to enter Ghana.
