From what I've heard the name Algeria which translates "Aldjazair" is a plural form of djazira, which means island, therefor Algeria means the islands, former names of Algeria is not as easy to pin since it's always been divided by wars and conflicts.
The kingdom of Numidia is the closest thing to the original name, also I'd like to note that before the original people of the area were being called Numidians, berbers "given by the Romans" or Carthaginians because of being part of the empire of Carthage, etc. They certainly maintained their original name Amazigh which is also a descriptive name meaning: Free men.
