To understand whether Hindus believe in heaven or afterlife, we must know the seven basic Hindu gods.

THE SEVEN BASIC HINDU GODS:

They are,

1. Indra - god of dreaming / god of heaven

2. Shakti - god of illusions

3. Brahma - god of creativity

4. Vishnu - god of stabilization

5. Shiva - god of determination

6. Shani - god of status alteration

7. Yama - god of compulsion / god of afterlife.

THE HINDU GODS NOT WORSHIPED IN THE MATERIALISTIC ERA:

Of the seven Hindu gods, the first three and a half (Negative half of Vishnu) oppose action and therefore they are not worshiped. Thus, most Hindus don't even know that there is a god by name Indra, who is the god of satisfaction / god of gods and the most important god of the Vedas. He is just known as the god whom Krishna humiliates by protecting villagers from the heavy rains produced by him (Indra), by lifting Govardhana hills and using it as a shield.

Of the next three and a half gods Shani is rarely worshiped and Yama not all, because they can't be used reliably.

YAMA - THE GOD OF DEATH AND AFTER LIFE:

Yama is so powerful and uncontrollable that activities executed through him become compulsive or get abolished automatically. However, in the materialistic world a god as powerful like Yama can't be ignored.

Thus, Yama, as god of death, doesn't abolish activities but makes them less powerful and modifies them (reincarnates them).

The belief in afterlife is so powerful that even some scientists have claimed that they have scientific evidence for Reincarnation!

Thus, the Hindus of the present materialistic era believe in afterlife and don't attach much importance to heaven.
