How do you kill a shinigami?
A shinigami can only die if they do not write names in their death note for a long enough period of time or if they break shinigami rules for which the punishment is death. One such rule is that a shinigami may not willfully extend a human's life. Through careful plotting, if you can identify what human the shinigami loves (if any) you can put that person in a position where he/she is endangered so that the shinigami will want to save them. Light killed Rem this way, by convincing her that killing L and Watari would extend Misa's life.

Who is Beyond Birthday in Death Note?
Beyond Birthday (aka BB) is a maniacal killer who is not in the original Death Note. He is introduced in Death Note: Another Note, the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases (a prequel to Death Note) as the head antagonist. His true appearance is unknown, as he cosplays as L. His personality is quite the opposite of L's, however; BB's goal is to become the world's best criminal or, more specifically, to devise a plan that L cannot solve. BB was born half-shinigami. He did not have to make the 'eye deal', unlike Misa Amane and Soichoro Yagami of the Death Note series. Like Wammy children, who seem to have certain quirks, BB's quirk is his love for jam. The Shinigami goes down to the human world and "drops" the Death Note that they had prepared for the human. Then a human picks up this notebook, and within a few days or weeks, that human will see and be followed by the Shinigami that previously owned that Death Note.
