His second wife was Bonnie Owens (a singer) and they married on June 28, 1965 (divorced)' then married Leona Williams (a singer) in 1978 (divorced), then married Debbie Parret (a cook) (divorced). He is now married to his fifth wife Theresa Lane (married Sept. 11, 1993) and they have two children: Jenessa and Ben.

Merle has a son named Marty. He was an upcoming Country Music star in the late 80's. Marty was involved in a near fatal car crash and lost his memory, some of his body movement, etc. for four years. He returned to the country music business in the 90's and was working on a come recording when he felt the call of God to become a minister. He walked out of the recording and began a preaching and music ministry which he is still strong in today
