This is because rheumatoid arthritis is an Autoimmune disease. That is the immune system of the body attacks cartilage in the joints and other tissue for no good reason. It has been found that certain drugs swith of the part of the system that causes the damaging inflamation, however one of the side effects is that it is also likely to switch of inflammation when it is required to deal with infections.
