Oh yes, it has! Besides the century from 1900-2000 (when the rest of the world was at war) Switzerland had armed conflicts on its territory in any past century.

Switzerland "was born" as defence alliance of three regions - now known as states or cantons (later joined others and now there are 20 full and 6 semi-cantons). One founder state called Schwyz gave the country's name. (And even the so called roots of the nation, the helvetians... an ancient German tribe - does not mean German as known today! - was in war many hundred years before against the Roman Empire... and as rome needed to focus on an enemy to avoid inner political problems they proclaimed them as evil mercenaries.)

In the medieval Swiss mercenaries were known everywhere in Europe... until the battle of Marignano in 1515. Later - after the period of Napoleon - the country was forced to get completely neutral (to form a border between hostile territories).

All this means that military service has a long tradition in Switzerland with the purpose to defend the country (no attacking armament).

And now more detailed to the answer. Military service is still compulsory for every male Swiss citizen (minimal service means 260 days). Some years ago the Swiss army (so called standing troops - ready at any moment) was one of the largest in Europe.

Was Switzerland a former colony of France?

No, Switzerland, formally the Confederation of Helvetia, is composed of twenty six cantons which function as states, counties and provinces. There are four national languages, French, German, Italian and Svitzerdeutch (many spellings) which is a variant on archaic German (trans. Swiss-deutch). Swiss (or CH) territories have been criss-crossed by invaders; i.e. Carthaginians, Romans. The cantons have been formed, for the most part along ethnic lines. There has never been a formal military or non-military invasion or colonization of Switzerland by the French or any other nation. To this day, while the Swiss government maintains a formidable, although neutral, military, it's only military projection beyond national borders is to provide Swiss soldiers (trained military) to the Vatican State as military and security protection. The Swiss guard were originally selected by the Vatican on the basis of Switzerland's centuries long tradition of neutrality The only French invasion of Switzerland is cultural, and that for the most part limited to French cheeses, which the Swiss accept, and French films and wines which the Swiss do not. Hope that helps, Bryan Zetlen
