A US passport will do.

However, France is a part of the Schengen territories. Basically this means you can stay in France for up to 90 days on a normal short stay visa (given upon entry to the country). You must then be out of France at least 90 days before you are able to return again for a visit.

If you wish to stay longer you will have to apply for a different kind of visa.

That is based on my personal experience with travel back and forth to France. It would behoove you to read the article listed in related links.

For short stays, US driving licenses are valid in France when accompanied by the International Driving Permit (IDP).

The driver must be at least 18 years old. Drivers are required to produce their license on demand when driving. The vast majority of cars have a manual gearbox (stick shift) and even car rentals have very few automatics.

US residents living in France for more than a year have to apply for a French driving license.

Canadians do not normally need a Schengen Visa. You are normally allowed into the Schengen area for 90 days as a tourist. This limit applies for all Schengen collectively.

If by American you mean US citizen, the answer is no.

That is if you are coming as a tourist. If a US citizen wants to live or work in France they do need a visa.
