Dragonflies do not live for only 24 hours. Dragonflies actually live for at least several months in a larval stage in ponds, and then emerge into adulthood as dragonflies which fly around. In this adult stage, dragonflies live for anywhere between a few days to several months and prey on other flying insects and look for a mate.

Dragonflies live for several moths, depending on the temperature. If it's too cold, they will only live for 'several' weeks, though.

Besides that, they are food for other animals (birds, reptiles, amphibians, etc.) and feed on other insects, including mosquitoes and horse flies.

That's like asking, why is a humans lifespan average 75 years?
However, I can tell you that most of the time larger creatures have longer lifespans, ie

Cat - 20 years
Mouse - 2 years
Pet fish around 3cm in length - 1 year
Amoeba - 1-2 days

That is a folk tale. The adults usually live for several months assuming they don't get eaten or freeze from early cold weather.
