I'm sure there are a few rare cases of weight gain while on Wellbutrin but the general consensus is weight loss not weight gain I have lost a great deal of weight while on wellbutrin XL 450mg

I've been on Wellbutrin XL 150mg now for 8 months. I've been on many other antidepressants and this is the first one that caused me to gain weight. It did it to my mother as well. Wellbutrin XL "slows" the digestive tract causing the food to remain in our systems longer. I guess it's one of those drugs that affects everyone differently. Like my Multiple Sclerosis med. I've been small my whole life and NEVER did I gain weight (130lbs) only when I was pregnant. My good weight was at 122. Amazing how different 8lbs makes me look. I don't like it at all. :0(

Wellbutrin/buproprion can cause appetite changes.  Most people report lower appetite and weight loss (mild to severe.)  There are few rare cases in which people's appetites increase.  Changes in appetite are considered a side effect, and it is not the main purpose of this medication.  This can be a problem with persons having past eating disorders, so any person having a past eating disorder not documented in medical records should inform their physician while receiving this medication so the appetite can be monitored more closely.
