Does Effexor cause weight loss

It depends on the person. Prozac is sometimes used to treat anorexia and bulimia. It occasionally causes some people to gain a little weight but it occasionally causes others to lose a little weight. Most people don't see a significant change in their weight.

Almost all psychotropic drugs have weight gain as a possible side effect. As far as antidepressants go Paxil causes the worst weight gain. Prozac probably has less weight gain than all the rest since they do prescribe Prozac for obesity.

I lost over 25 pound since I started the Effexor 4 months ago. It is like an appetite suppressant. I just weighed myself every week and drank 70 ounces of water per day. I also stopped drinking alcohol. This is a requirement not to mix the 2 together. If you are drinking alcohol (at all) that could be the weight gain problem with these drugs. I've haven't seen any other reason why people gain weight on these drugs. No one knows for sure...but my doctor said don't drink alcohol and I lost weight!

Just monitor your weight, drink lots of water, exercise 4 times per week for at least 50 minutes (elliptical trainer) using a heart monitor to keep a stable heart rate and consistent workout. I don't eat over 1800 calories per day. I have a friend of mine that recently started Effexor and he also is losing weight like crazy. He followed my advice about the water, no alcohol, exercise, and limiting calories.

One last thing...My doctor also told me that most of his patients lose weight or maintain weight on Effexor. He said there are more issues with making sure he tells his patient to eat 3 meals a day. So far everything he has told is consistent with my results. Remember, when you get older your metabolism slows down…so being on this drug for years could just be that. Just take a look around you….the majority of people in this country are overweight and gain weight regularly. And the majority of those folks are not taking any medication!

Effexor may cause some weight gain. Part of this is that depression causes you to lose your appetite and when you treat that, you suddenly begin eating more. Some people do find that effexor causes them to gain weight in addition to this effect, however. If you have gained more than ten pounds and are not able to lose it with diet and exercise, you should see if your doctor will try another antidepressant.

Yes, it did for me! Within 6 months i had gained 9 pounds! I exercised all the time, ate healthily but no the pounds still went on!

I have stopped taking them now as i am convinced that's whats caused the weight gain, even though the doctor said its probably not!

I have been on effexor for 3 months and have lost about 10 pounds and feel very calm and rational. Others I know indicate a significant weight gain after a period of time that is hard to lose after stopping the medication.

I’ve gained 20lbs since I’ve taken it. It’s been 2 years. I lost 8 lbs but quickly gained it back within a month. Seriously thinking about getting off of it.
