No, you will tone that specific area but you can not 'spot' lose weight by simly doing cruches. By doing crunches you may lose weight from any part of your body.

So I have always heard to get a flat stomach to do crunches. Is this the case even when you are big, like while trying to lose weight and cardio should i also do crunches and ab workouts? I know I won't see results now, but will it help me more later to go ahead and start doing them?

There is no such thing as spot reduction. You cannot reduce fat only in your abdomen by doing crunches. Unfortunately, that is not how it works. You must lose total body fat to have less fat in your stomach, so burn more calories than you're taking in. Crunches help burn some calories, and help define your stomach muscles, but will not burn fat just in that area.
It's not that crunches don't work, it's that they won't get you a flat stomach. What you want is to do cardio. Anything that gets your body moving and your heart rate up will help you lose fat. When you do lose the fat around your stomach you will see the results of the crunches (muscle definition). It's good to do both (and not just crunches other "absentric" moves) if you want a flat stomach, but being active and eating well will lose the fat that is really the point of flat stomacs.
Squats can help you gain muscle, which could help you gain weight theoretically.
doing crunches makes muscle on top of fat and after that its almost impossible to lose that fat!
It will only help a little bit. Apart from liposuction there's no way of deciding where to lose fat, so to get rid of belly fat you need to lose weight overall. And 3x a week isn't enough exercise to use up any substantial amounts of calories.
Do lots of sit-ups and crunches Okay no. All that will do is build up your layer of muscle. Your stomach goes... Muscle, fat, and then skin so by doing crunches and sit ups all it does is make your abs bigger. Not burn fat. By doing this u will ultimatly end up looking bigger than before.

Actually crunches won't help they are working a different muscle. You need to start doing areobics and work yourself up to 4 20 min workouts a week and start eating healthy and do some weight lift training. That should help a lot!
