"No matter where you reside in the United States, Medicare should pay 80 percent of the allowable price for your electric wheelchair once you are approved. The allowable price will vary by state, chair type and accessories ordered. The average electric wheelchair will have a price of $4800-$6500."

Medicare will pay for a wheelchair only as a capped rental item. This means that for 13 months, you make monthly rental payments, and at the end of the 13 month rental period, you own the wheelchair. There are different guidelines for different chairs, but for the most part, if a wheelchair will help you complete your activities of daily living, will be used inside the home (and can fit inside the home), a manual chair will be covered.

Where can I get a used wheelchair for a fraction of the cost online?

You can probably get the best deal off of ebay. First I would recommend checking Walmart.com and Amazon.com and seeing how much a full priced wheelchair costs. Both of those stores will offer them at very competitive prices. Other sites to check out are: www.medmarketplace.com and www.used-wheelchairs-usa.com There is an online site called The Wheelchair Site and it sells used wheelchairs. If you have Medicaid or Medicare and the wheelchair is medically necessary, you could request a prescription from your medical doctor. With a perscription for a wheel chair your medicare or medicaid insurance should pay for it.

Can I get my health insurance to pay for all or part of a wheelchair ramp for my home?

Depending on your health insurance, you might be able to get them to pay for a wheelchair ramp if your doctor considers it a medical necessity. Unfortunately, Medicare doesn't pay for ramps. Talk to your doctor and call local government and social programs to see if you can find a way to cover the cost of the wheelchair ramp.
