A plasma panel is a layered device. It is comprised of millions of cells each lined with a red, blue or green phosphor, much like a CRT is coated with the same color phosphor dots. Each cell is filled with a gas and wired to a computer chip that tells it when it needs to light. When the gas is electrified it causes a plasma gas discharge that emits ultraviolet light. That in turn causes the phosphor to glow its color. The complete pattern is scanned in lines from top to bottom in a 60th of a second. (Therefore twice in a 30th of a second which is the time it takes for your eye to comprehend and register any image).

A Plasma tv works like this; the pixels are coated with red green and blue phosphors. They are then filled with xenon and neon gases, which when hit with electrical charges change from a gaseous state to a plasma like state. They emit ultra violet light which exictes the electrons in the phosphours and whala, you have a picture. This is basically how this type of tv produces a picture without need of an auxillary light source like an lcd tv needs.

Plasma is known as the fourth state of matter. It can be found when gases are at extremely high temperatures. Our best known example is the sun, where much of the matter is in a plasma state.

At lower temperatures, a plasma can be created when a low pressure gas is subjected to an electric field. Inside a fluorescent tube, a low pressure gas becomes a plasma when a high voltage is imposed across the length of the tube. As electrical current flows, the plasma releases energy which causes the phosphor coating in the inside of the glass to glow.

Plasma televisions operate in a similar way. Thousands of small cells contain a low pressure gas and as current flows through each cell, the energy released causes a red, green or blue phosphor at the front of the cell to light up.

Although both the sun and a plasma television contain matter in a plasma state, the plasma is generated in very different ways.

Plasma televisions are one of a number of types currently available on the market. The display is made of cells that are similar to a fluorescent light bulb in that they use a phosphor to generate red, green or blue light from an electrical current through a gas. Every pixel uses three colored cells.

LCD, on the other hand uses liquid crystal shutters to pass or block light from a light source behind the LCD panel. The crystals don't emit light themselves in the way that the plasma pixels do.

Plasma is less popular now as LCD displays are far better than than they were only a few years ago. The benefits of plasma such as richer color and higher contrast are much less evident than they were.

Plasma is the method used to generate the image. Unlike LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technologies, plasma uses individual cells of ionized gas to create the display. A high current of electricity is applied to the cell and it glows.

Some televisions are plasma displays, although these models are less common these days. Most flat-screen TV's are Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) backlit with either flourescent bulbs or Light Emitting Diodes (LED).
