Yes and no. The act of simply existing burns calaries. Calories are a measurement of heat and more closely compare to a form of energy. Therefore, even a body at total rest consumes calories, albeit not necessarily a lot. At all times there is a significant amount of activity in a resting person, including brain activity, respiration, and circulation. Depending upon the amount of exertion on a given day, most bodies use 11 to 15 calories per pound of body weight. Not only does the amount of exertion affect this number, but also the amount of muscle to body weight. Most people, however, when asking about calorie expenditure, are talking about the additional use of calories that activity provides. Running provides difference caloric expenditure than swimming or playing soccer, for example. Reading provides little measurable additional caloric consumption, although there will be a tiny bit.
If you are sitting, then no.
That is a horrible answer and i did not answer it.
You burn more calories playing on the computer than watching TV. Both burn very few calories, though.
Asleep
I read in this health book , i think it was the healthy food guide that you burn slightly more calories sleeping than just sitting and watching. It has something to do with your body repairing cells and other stuff it has to work slightly harder than when you're just sitting.
You don't burn much, but certainly about a good 20 to 50 calories.

Reading burns very few calories, typically around 30 calories per hour for a 155-pound person. The exact amount can vary depending on factors such as reading speed and intensity. Overall, reading is not a significant calorie-burning activity.
Light reclining - reading burns 70 calories per hour.
Well, sort of. Watching TV is a very passive occupation(you don't move around a lot), and if you don't move you don't burn many calories. And if you only burn a few calories it gets easier and easier to eat more calories than you loose over a day. And if you're eating more calories than you burn the excess calories will stay with you as weight gain.
Eating pineapple adds calories, it doesnt burn them - despite what you may have read in a diet book.
Cleaning the house, walking, sex, dancing, cutting the grass, bike ride, swimming.....
Running raises our metabolic rate, so we burn calories even while at rest. Running helps to burn calories while watching TV, while sleeping, even while taking a shower.
