No. The metal doesn't explode either! although electrical sparks will fly!

Basically, objects can be heated by vibration of their component molecules and/or atoms/electrons. For food there is a lot of water available (remember: we're about 70% water!) so microwaves are set to transmit radio waves that will vibrate water molecules very effectively. The water can't just move freely (it's in the food, remember) so it has to absorb the energy - thus it gets hot.

However, if you put something that has atoms or electrons that can move freely then they'll do just that! The metallic edging on some plates and cups is like that, and can get very hot, and even melt!

It won't explode, though. Explosions happen when something wants to expand and is prevented from doing so for long enough for the force to grow enough to burst the container. Over-inflating a balloon is a good example - just blowing air into it won't cause an explosion - it's blowing more in when the container (the balloon fabric) is stretched as far as it can go that causes the pop!
