no......... the speed changes as it goes through different materials

example:

when sound goes through air it is faster then when it transfers to go through water because water is more dense and there are more particles for it to have to pass through

Why do waves change speed as they travel through earths layer?

Different materials have different velocities of sound propagation.

How fast does sound travel through materials?

Every material has its elastic modulus, and the speed of sound is proportional to the square root of the elastic modulus of that material.

What affects how sound is transmitted?

Sound can travel, more or less, through any matter, but not at all through a vacuum. The main factors that affect the speed of sound are as follows: Temperature: Hotter materials allow sound to travel faster Density: Sound travels faster in denser materials Elasticity: This means the ability for the molecules of a material to bounce back to their original positions quicky. The more elastic a material, the faster sound can travel through it.

How slow or fast can sound vibrations go?

It depends very much on the medium which the sound has to travel through. Sound will not travel through a vacuum at all. Sound will travel faster through materials that are more dense, so that the speed of sound through solids and liquids is faster than the speed of sound through gases. In Earth's atmosphere, the speed of sound is faster at sea level than the speed of sound at high altitude. Generally, the speed of sound through air at sea level and normal temperatures is about 340 metres per second, while the speed of sound through a steel bar is about 5000 metres per second. However, the speed of sound through solids can be two different discrete values, depending on the mode of vibration propagation - compression waves or slower shear waves.

The speed of sound is slowest in what type of matter?

sound cannot travel through a vacum

What speed does sound travel through iron?

5120 m/s

Can sound travel through ground?

hi, sound does travel through ground. the speed at which sounds travels depends on the medium. the denser the medium, the slower it travels and stiffer the medium, the faster it travels.

Can sound travel through other kinds of material than air if so does it travel differently?

Sound can travel through all matter. The speed at which it travels depends on the density of the material.

How fast do sound waves travel through a vacuum?

You'd have to say that the speed of sound waves in vacuum is zero, becausesound can't travel through vacuum at all. Not even an inch. Sound needs amaterial substance to travel through.

Why do light waves travel faster then sound waves?

Electromagnetic waves travel independently of the medium through which they travel -- while transparent matter can impede its passage, no transfer of energy from molecule to molecule is required as with sound waves and other vibrations. The speed of sound is limited by the motion of molecules, which is faster in denser materials.

What is the speed of sound through paper?

Sound waves need matter to travel through, and wood is matter, so yes, sound waves travel through wood. They travel through wood faster than they do through air, as wood is denser than air.

Can sound waves travel through different materials such as Styrofoam metal wood wool and plastic?

Sound waves can travel through different materials such as the ones listed here. However, their speed is what sets them apart. When sound travels through water, for example, it will travel faster than it does in the air. This is because the water molecules are placed closer together than air molecules, and can transfer sound waves more quickly. As a rule, sound travels slowest through gases, slightly faster through liquids, and fastest of all through solids. As with all science, there are exceptions to all rules. For example, some solids do not allow sound to pass through them at all. They are soundproof.
