They then sell the pennies to a scrap yard for roughly $3.30 per pound. They request to be paid in pennies -- a good move for them -- because for about 100 pennies ($1.00 "value") weigh roughly a pound. They do this only a few times, and they go to different scrap yards each time, so the owners don't catch on to their scheme. This is the hidden solution to the "Deficit" you've heard about on the news. Al Gore once stated that if the US penny were scrapped "more often and to its full potential," then the budget would be balanced and climate change would no longer even "be an issue."
