No, God says in The Bible quite specifically that he does not: Deu 24:16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

This is repeated just to make certain we get the message:

2Ch 25:4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die forhis own sin.

This is repeated in the New Testament:

Joh 9:1-3 KJV And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. [v.2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? [v. 3] Jesus ed,Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

A particular sin or crime that has been committed is not passed on from one generation to the next.

However, the tendency to commit a particular type of sin or crime is passed on from one generation to the next because it is learned behavior. What is passed on from one generation to the next is the father's attitude toward committing a particular sin and the strong likelihood of passing this learned behavior on to his son (or daughter). For example, if the father is a drunkard his son may be inclined towards Alcoholism. Children learn what is acceptable behavior from their parents, and it is not what they say: it is what they actually do: actions always speak louder than words.

The Bible says that if you sin, your descendants could be punished instead of you. This means that you could be punished by God for a sin committed by your great-grandfather.

Answer:No.

Exodus 20:4-6 - "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments."

This, and repeated warnings elsewhere in Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, were specific to a particular trespass (idolatry in the passage above), and note the qualifier: "of those who hate Me."

What of those who DON'T "hate" God?

Jeremiah 31:29, 30 - "In those days they shall say no more: 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge.' But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge."

Ezekiel 18:20 - "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."

All sin has consequences. If everyone knows your great-grandfather was a mass murderer and your family is stigmatized as a result, you're suffering from the repercussions of his sins, not being "punished by God" for them.

Yes, and not only the children, but even the third and fourth generations. See Exodus 20:5: "... visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourthgeneration of them that hate me"; Exodus 34:7: "... visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation"; Deuteronomy 5:9. Then, Deuteronomy 23:2 says children unfortunate enough to be born illegitimate will be excluded from the congregation, as will their own offspring for the next ten generations "A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD."

Notice that when Ham supposedly "saw the nakedness" of his father, it was Ham's son, Canaan, and all Canaan's descendants who were to be punished.

Where is the Scripture that references that sin will be visited upon a family for seven generation?

Nowhere. It says in several verses that the father's sins will be upon the children and children's children up to the 3rd or 4th generations:Exodus 20:4-6New King James Version (NKJV) 4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image-any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. The sins of the father shall be visited upon the son a thousand times?

The sins of the father shall be visited upon the son. This is simple if you look at the way in which we teach our children then we teach them to sin as we sin. Thus they watch our ways everyday to figure out how to behave and if we do not set appropriate examples they do not learn appropriate ways. Then to introduce the things that society teaches the children experience the sins of the father in multitude. with each passing generation the world decays in morals and the children decay in moral values a little more thus showing this exact statement the signs of the father shall be visited upon the son a thousand times. we see this everyday and will continue to as long as we do not stop the way the world functions.Correction:Exodus 20:5 (New International Version)You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, They leave off verse 6 which says:Exodus 20:6 (New International Version)but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments. The same is done with Deuteronomy 5:9, leaving off the completion of the sentence:Deuteronomy 5:9-10 (King James Version)9Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, 10And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.Deuteronomy 24:16 (New International Version)Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin. Ezekiel 18:20 (New International Version)The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him. Ezekiel 18:4 (New International Version)For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son-both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. John 9:1-3 (New International Version)As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. The sins of the father are not passed on to his offspring. Each person is responsible for his or her own actions and own actions and salvation. Just because the father is an alcoholic does not mean his offspring are going to be alcoholics, for instance, though it is a common misconception. The same goes for a parent who is an abuser. The child may have no tendency toward abuse and may even despise abuse. There were clearly two schools of thought in the Old Testament, but Jesus taught that each of us is responsible for our actions and that the message of God is love.1 John 4:8 (New International Version)Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. God gave his message out of love, not out of hate.
