Yes, it can but it is unusual. Only on very high mileage engines, or abused engines (ran with no/low oil or not changing the oil when necessary). I would rule out this problem if it this a newer vehicle and has been maintained well.
Sounds like the timing is out of adjustment, perhaps timing chain has jumped

If your car has the 2.8V6 it has a timing chain. If your car has the 2.54 cylinder engine it has timing gears. Neither has a timing belt or the problems that come with one.
