During the World War I France was a member of the alliance of the Entente Powers who was at war with the Central Powers. The main Powers of the Entente were initially France, Great Britain and Russia. They were joined from the beginning by Serbia and Belgium, who were attacked by Austria-Hungary and Germany. The British Dominions and Crown Colonies helped Great Britain (countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India etc.) So were the France's colonies and protectorates (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Madagascar, Congo etc.) Later in the war other countries joined the Entente: Japan in 1914, Italy in 1915, Portugal and Romania in 1916, United States, Cuba,Panama, Greece, Siam (that is Thailand of today), Liberia, China, Brazil in 1917, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Haiti in 1918.
