The 'dust bowl' was the famous metaphor used to describe the Californian land. Over farming during the great depression in California, as well as the hot weather resulted in the terrain being very dry and not very good for crops.

The Dust Bowl is a weather crisis that took place around the same time as the setting of To Kill a Mockingbird. The setting of the book takes place during the Great Depression. A specific definition of The Dust Bowl is that it was a drought in the South(where Scout and Jem lived-Alabama) that led to dust storms that destroyed crops. The crops were turned to dust which equals to no food throughout the U.S. because most crops back then grew in the South. Homes were buried and fields were blown away. Overall, the Dust Bowl was the #1 weather crisis in the 20th century. Hoped that helped. (:
