The maid of honor's job is to be the bride's best friend. As her closest friend, you should continue doing all the things that a best friend has always done. Be there for her when she needs you, listen if she has problems, help her if you can, get excited with her over what is going on in her life, etc.

Typically, a MOH chooses to throw a shower or bachelorette party, and she will typically choose to help the bride with a few wedding tasks. While not required duties, these are nice things that you should do for your best friend if you can.

You will probably also need to sign the marriage license, and you can give a toast or a speech at the reception if you want to.

Traditionally the maid of honor's job is to keep the wedding on track with what the bride wants. The maid of honor also typically arranges and hosts the bachelorette party. However, the scope of duties and work varies depending upon the individual bride and maid of honor. Some brides prefer to plan everything out and manage it all, or have a professional wedding planner do the legwork and such. The rest of the bridesmaids may also want to help out, depending upon their individual relationship with the bride.

The Maid of Honor (Matron of Honor if married) is like a 'maid in waiting' and is to tend to the bride's wishes by helping her out. Here are her duties:

  • Go with the bride to choose her wedding dress (mother may be present) and help her get in and out of wedding dresses.
  • Once the bride to be has picked out her wedding dress then the Maid of Honor should attend all fittings of the wedding dress.
  • The Maid of Honor should go shopping with the bride for shoes, gloves or anything that pertains to the wedding preparations (unless the bride's mother chooses to go with her daughter.)
  • The Maid of Honor generally give a wedding shower for the bride to be with the help from the Bridesmaids.
  • Often young women have a Bachelorette Party put on by the Maid of Honor with the help of Bridesmaids where all the bride to be's female friends go out one night and just celebrate her last night of freedom as a single woman.
  • On the wedding day the Maid of Honor is in charge of helping the bride to get ready for the wedding and should be at the bride parent's home in the morning. Generally the bride, Maid of honor and Bridesmaid go and get their hair done and possibly their makeup and nails done as well.
  • It is up to the Maid of Honor to be sure the bride is ready on time and that everything is running smoothly with the Bridesmaids and flower girl (if there is one.)
  • The Matron of Honor and Bridesmaid ride with the Bride in the limo to the church. Matron of Honor as well as the Bridesmaid help to pick up the bride's wedding dress train (if she has one) to keep it clean.
  • Once at the church the Maid of Honor should be sure that bride is as calm as possible; check out her hair and make-up and be sure that the train to her wedding dress is flowing out correctly behind her.
  • The Flower Girl would be the first to go down the aisle of the church; then the Bridesmaids and then the Matron of Honor. All stand to the left of the altar (Maid of Honor closest to the bride.)
  • When the bride comes down the aisle on her father's arm he will leave her at the altar and sit in the first pew to the left. Before the bride says her vows to the groom and the ring is put on her finger she will hand the Matron of Honor her bouquet to hold. Once the ceremony has ended then the Matron of Honor gives the bride back her bouquet. The bride and groom are now Mr. and Mrs. and will go down the aisle with the Flower Girl; then the Maid of Honor will hold onto the arm of the Best Man and the Bridesmaid's will hold onto the arms of the Ushers.
  • Once outside of the church the Matron of Honor may have to help the bride pull her wedding dress into the limo before the groom enters the limo.
  • Generally outdoor pictures are taken while the guests gather at the reception area for the evening. The Maid of Honor, Flower Girl and Bridesmaid will go to the area in which the wedding pictures will be taken.
  • Once at the reception the bride and groom enter the reception hall with an introduction of 'Mr. & Mrs.' and then the Flower Girl; Maid of Honor with her escort and the Bridesmaids with their escorts will enter after the bride and groom and be seated at the head table once the bride and groom are seated first.
  • The Maid of Honor or Bridesmaids have the choice of saying a toast to the bride and groom if they wish, but it is not necessary.
  • Maid of Honor should be aware of any problems the bride may have such as having to have her train removed from her wedding dress (if it is removable) and to escort her into the lady's washroom to help the bride freshen up or if she has to use the washroom.
  • The Maid of Honor (if the bride chooses) may have to help the bride into her 'going away outfit' just before the bride and groom leave the reception.

The matron of honor is like the bride's co-pilot. She needs to be there for her bride and be just as dedicated to the success of the wedding. She goes with the bride on pretty much all of the errands that deal with the wedding and she helps keep everyone in line on the day of the wedding including making sure the bride has everything she needs and doesn't forget anything that she needs to bring with her.

Also she is in charge of making a toast and planning the bachlorette party

I've been a maid of honor for two times in a row last December, so most probably, I know the duties. Both weddings were arranged by One Heart wedding planner. First, a maid of honor should act like a leader to the other maids, making sure that they had their gown fittings. She also prepares the bridal shower. She's also hands on with wedding planning like choosing the motif, invitation design, wedding dress and the likes. She talks to the wedding planner as well.

  • The Maid of Honor is the very best friend of the bride. The Maid of Honor is to wait and serve the bride and generally holds a Bridal Shower and should attend all other Bridal Showers given unless it's a work related Bridal Shower given by coworkers; helps the bride find the right wedding dress; goes to the fittings of the wedding dress with her and be sure the bride always looks her best. This will carry on the day of the wedding when the bride is at home getting ready; the church service (until she enters the limo or car with her new husband) and then Maid of Honor will pick up her duties at the Wedding Reception to be sure the bride has everything she needs. If the bride should have to use the washroom then the Maid of Honor is responsible for this (to lift the wedding dress up) and may need help from the Bridesmaids. A 'Matron of Honor' is titled for a married woman and 'Maid of Honor' is an unmarried woman.
