Most likely yes , the engine thermostat has failed in the open position - happened on my 1995 Ford Explorer even though I have always had the cooling system serviced
Find the big hose that runs to the top of the radiator. At the other end where it is attached to the engine is called the thermostat housing. The thermostat is inside.
yes not good for the engine if it runs too cold either
If the engine runs cold you might try replacing the thermostat. I had a similar problem with a Plymouth van, at low rpms, turning corners,,, it would stall.
Thermostat
Rear of engine, underneath the exhaust manifold. you can follow the coolant line (approx. 2") tha runs underneath your engine, then runs up the back of the engine, up to the thermostat.
If your dashboard gauge is ok and the needle is moving when the engine start to warm up but never attempt the middle you have to check the thermostat as follow: you start the cold engine and carefully you keep your hand on the hose which transfer the cooling fluid from engine to radiator. If immediatelly after starting the engine the hot water goes through the hose, is 100% shure that thermostat is blocked open and needs to be replaced. A blocked thermostat in the position closed will cause more damaged because the engine will be overheated and the headgasket will be "burned".
Try changing the thermostat.
I assume you are talking about the engine thermostat. Looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle, look for the water pump where all the black cooling lines come together (will be on the front of the engine, almost at the top). There will be a small bypass hose about 6 inches long that runs from one side of a small dome housing to the other. Inside that dome housing is the thermostat.
Depends on the thermostat. Most vehicles run a 195 thermostat and the engine coolant temp runs between 195 and 225.
possibly a leak in cooling system
Your problem lies in not having a thermostat installed. Without a thermostat, the engine takes longer to reach normal operating temperature. Hence, why it runs sluggish for the first half mile or so.
drivers side look at the top radiator hose that runs down between battery and engine. where the hose connects to engine you have to remove that housing and its inside. factory is 198 Fahrenheit
