Several causes: dead fuel pump, bad distributor, bad ECM, vacuum leak, broken timing belt. Check for fuel in tank (never trust the gas gauge alone), check for spark, check for broken vacuum lines. If all that checks out, open the timing belt cover (black plastic along left (passenger side) of engine. If the pulley dailed, the retainer bolt sometimes breaks through the cover.
Worst case is timing belt; If the timing belt went out, normally a catastrophic failure that can cause the pistons to hit and destroy the intake/exhaust valves, but not for this car. Ford made this a non-interference engine so the valves will be clear of the piston. The replacement is not very easy but can be done by two people with a basic understanding of vehicle engines and a haynes manual for under $50 including a new belt and pulley kit.
this happened on me, it turned out to be the earth strap from the engine to the chassis had gone rotten and broke loose, this stopped the engine from running but it would still turn over
check the torsion dampener.
