This category covers questions about the Chevrolet small-block engine variant 305. The 305 had a displacement of 305 cubic inches, with a 3.7350-inch bore, and 3.4803-inch stroke.
  All Chevy V8's and inline 6 use the same bolt pattern and it is different from the bolt pattern used for Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Cadillac. A transmission that fits one Chevy V8 or inline 6 will fit any other V8 or inline 6. Not sure if V6 uses the same pattern.

A 305 had a 3.75 bore with 3.48 stroke. Adding .030 to the bore and using the formula pi times the radius squared times the stroke times the number of cylinders equals 312.

A K1500 4x4 short wheelbase is the closest. The wheelbase of the caprice is 116" and the K1500 4x4swb is 117.5". I'm looking to do the same with an 87 caprice. Seems like a surburban frame with a section cut out and boxed may be the way to go. as the frame looks similar to the caprice
buy a Chilton's manual or a Haynes repair manual they have them in them You can but if you go to LMC truck you can order the whole diagram of the vacuum lines and it is a sticker that goes under the hood for about $4-6 dollars and you can get a magazine for your truck giving you all replacement...

pull out a vaccuum gauge install on vaccuum port of carburetor start vehicle use adjustment screws to pull the most vaccuum as possible on each port,repeat process on second port once adjusted press throttle to around 2000 r.p.m.'s to determine where vaccuum gauge needle is operating at.
  if you have never done this before,i suggest you purchase a good manual for your car and follow the instructions.there is a long list of things that must be done in a certain order to remove/replace a head(s) and get it running again.
It would be best not to put any transmission fluid in the engine. Really!! I'd never of guessed. I guess the clue is 'transmission and fluid' and that the fluid goes in the transmission!! the reason I put the type of engine was IOT assist someone with a realistic answer, I didn't expect for one...

That head was used on the 305 engines from 1987 to 1991. NOTHING SPECIAL about that head at all.
Stamped on the front of the motor in front of the carbuerator. Also the cars booh should have. Try callin an aout parts store too
Bring number one cylinder to top dead center. Make Sher you on the compression stroke. If not your 360 degrees off with you piston setting for tdc. Make Sher that the distributor rotor is pointing at number one wire on the cap. That should put you in time.
You would need to know the gear ratio and tire diameter to calculate engine speed.

take all the wiring and hoses loose from the top of the engine, and you might have to remove the valve covers. then just loosen the intake manifold bolts
Stroking an engine means changing to a crankshaft with a longer stroke such as putting a crank from a 400 into a 350 block. Changing to a different head could change the compression ratio and the amount of flow through the intake and exhaust.
I can answer this because a buddy of mine did it. A distributor from a 305 will fit a 350, however it will not perform as well. Loss of horse power and you won't be able to get the timing set perfectly, because of this you will need to adjust the carburator. to the timing. It's a headache, my buddy...

On the 305 engine the number one plug position is the first one on the right side while you are facing the engine.

It depends on your heads. Throttle body was introduced in 87 which is also the same year small blocks got a new head design. The valve covers had center bolt holes instead of two bolts on top and two on the bottom. On 1986 and down the four center intake bolts were angled like the rest of the bolts....

pull off the intake and the valve covers. then take off the rockers and pull up the push rods. then pull up the lifters using a speacial tool from the parts store. be very careful keep them in order. dont get dirt on anything!
