Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate, commonly known as ultimate frisbee, is a sport which involves a flying disc. The object of the game is to pass the disc from one player to another player who is in the opposing team's end zone, similar to American football and rugby. Players cannot run with the disc, and can only move one foot while holding the disc.

There are two defenders with different names. A defender guarding the offensive handler is known as the marker. He marks the disc. A defender anywhere else is just a defender. No special name.

The possession changes when the defending team swats the disc to the ground or catches it. Also, if the offensive team drops the disc or throws it out of bounds or into the ground, then possession is changed.

In terms of "stealing," there is never a time when you can simply take the disc out of a players' hands. Here are some occasions where the disc can be turned over:

  • The offensive team has an incomplete pass or drops the disc.
  • Someone on defense catches the disc.
  • Someone on defense hits the disc to the ground.

How far away does a person have to stand away from a person who is throwing a frisbee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Good question!

"How far away does the defense have to stand from the thrower in ultimate Frisbee?" has two answers, and it depends on which defender you are talking about. I've answered the question here using the most current set of rules for play in the United States- the 11th edition USAUltimate Rulebook. These answers are also correct according to the World Flying Disc Federation, which governs international competition.

The primary defender in this situation is called the "mark." That defender is the person responsible for limiting the range of throws available to the thrower. According to rule XIV.B.3, the mark must stand at least "one disc space" from the thrower, which applies to all points of the mark's body. Here, disc space refers to the diameter of the disc being played with- in most cases a discraft Ultrastar 175g disc, which has a diameter of 10.75 inches. So, while playing, if any line drawn between the thrower and the marker at any point on their bodies would measure less than 10.75 inches, the marker would be committing a violation. This particular violation is called a "disc space" violation.

You may also see secondary defenders playing defense on the thrower. This is most often observed in zone defenses, rather than in man-to-man defenses. Any defender on the field may act as a secondary defender with regard to the thrower. The secondary defender (or defenders) cooperate with the mark to more severely limit the range of throws available to the thrower. According to rule XIV.B.2, any defender who is not the marker must remain at least 3 meters from the thrower, as long as they are playing defense on the thrower. However, a defender may come closer than 3 meters if they are guarding an offensive player who is not the thrower. Violation of this rule is called a "double team."

These answers are provided according to the rules stated in the 11th edition rulebook as established by USAUltimate, the national governing body for Ultimate in the United States.

Although there are some differences between US rules and International rules for Ultimate, in the case of this question, both sets of rules agree.

The Discraft Ultrastar 175g disc has been the official disc used for Ultimate (both in the US and internationally) since 1981.

What is stall count used for in ultimate frisbee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The stall count is used to speed up the game and to avoid players running the clock. At the first utterance of the number ten, the thrower must have released the disc from their possession or else it is a turnover.

What is considered out of bounds in ultimate frisbee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Just like in any other sport, there are boundaries around the field. However, if the disc flies past the boundaries, it is not necessarily out of bounds yet. Quality players curve the disc out of bounds and back in and, if caught in bounds, is still considered in and good. If a player jumps from in bounds and catches and throws the disc in play, before he hits the ground, that is considered in and good (this is commonly known as "the greatest" due to its difficulty to accomplish). Once the disc hits the ground out of play or a player catches the disc out of bounds, it is considered a dead disc.

Also recognize that if the disc hits the ground, in the field or past the boundaries, it is a turnover and the other team picks up the disc.

How many steps are you allowed after you catch the frisbee in ultimate frisbee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The given limit is 3 steps, in a straight line. But if you are moving at considerable speed then it's acceptable that more may be needed, a sporting agreement!

However, if you move in an arc or turn as you come to a stop, this is considered traveling and can be called as a foul.

In the newest version of the rules there is no established step number, it is a self call but a travel will be called if you go an unreasonable amount of steps, I believe the rules state something like as many steps need to slow to a stop

Where did Ultimate Frisbee first begin?

Asked by Wiki User

Bridgeport Connecticut, by the Frisbie Baking Company (pie makers)

Later marketed & mass produced by "Wham-O", inc.

http://inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa980218.htm

The Frisbie Baking Company (1871-1958) of Bridgeport, Connecticut, made pies that were sold to many New England colleges. Hungry college students soon discovered that the empty pie tins could be tossed and caught, providing endless hours of game and sport. Many colleges have claimed to be the home of 'he who was first to fling.' Yale College has even argued that in 1820, a Yale undergraduate named Elihu Frisbie grabbed a passing collection tray from the chapel and flung it out into the campus, thereby becoming the true inventor of the Frisbie and winning glory for Yale. That tale is unlikely to be true since the words 'Frisbie's Pies' was embossed in all the original pie tins and from the word 'Frisbie' was coined the common name for the toy.

What is the function of a frisbee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Frisbee was made to be thrown. In Ultimate, if you do not throw the disc, then you cannot score, and nobody would ever have fun. Since throwing is the only way to advance the disc, this is what you have to do, making it the msot important aspect of Frisbee.

How do you beat bonus level 4 on frisbee forever?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The hardest part is gaining enough speed to pass the reverse field. Even too much tilting of the frisbee will slow you enough to fail. Launch frisbee when 1st shark is about to slide left. Enter ring slightly right of center, this will allow you to slip by 2nd shark (it will be on you right) and then through next ring without wavering. Enter ring slightly to left of center. Enter 1st fan approx @ 7 o'clock then to 2nd fan @ approx 5 o'clock (this takes practice) get through 3rd fan on rt side so you are as close as possible to a straight line for the triple rings. These you must enter clean thru the center of each or you will not pass reverse field. Again do this with little to no tilting of the frisbee. As you improve you will get closer & closer to the exit ring, and eventually pass. The rest of the run is fairly straight forward, it will just take practice to pass the disappearing rings and 2nd set of fans.

The most important piece of equipment is a disc. You cannot play without a Frisbee! Also, you need cones to set up a field if you do not have an official field. Kleats are another important aspect of the game. Slipping can be quite embarassing.
