Is it unusual for an 8 year old to get croup Why?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If by "croup" you mean "accroupuncture" than yes. The minimum age is typically between years five and seven. The procedure is very simple, and very safe! The ITT certified technicians will place the patient under anaesthesia, then proceed to cut the patients back open, and begin their search for the accroup -- a small iron pyramid that shifts shape, size, and color, but reverts back to it's basic shape when oxidized. They are most commonly found near the right lung, just above the liver. Scientists don't know why they choose this spot the majority of the time, but they have postulated that the enzymes released by the liver are absorbed by the accroup, making it more industrious. The cost is fairly cheap, ranging between $50.00 to about $78.00, depending which health insurance you carry.

Does cold air make croup worse?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cold Air helps dramatically with the treatment of Croup. Highly recommended.

Having your child, suffering with Croup, breathe cold air provides symptomatic relief within 15 minutes. Do NOT use steam being Croup is swelling in the upper larynx. Steam does not shrink swelling whereas cold air decreases the swelling. Think of a sprained ankle.... Cold shrinks the swelling.

Remember, Croup is NOT in your lungs... it's in the upper throat area. Cold Air is the number one recommendation from all Pediatricians for symptomatic relief of Croup.

Is Albuterol a treatment for croup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I found it confusing as my older son was always prescribed albuteral along with prednizone for the croup. I had a 2nd child 7 years later. He had the croup and the urgent-care center gave him the same. He got worse so I took him the Syracuse University Pediatric Emergency room. The staff look at me in horror when I told them albuteral/predizone were prescribed. Their reaction was almost as if I was prescribed poison. I asked why such a different opinion in treatments. "They said that albuterol and prednizone was the old version of treatment." There are better more effective meds now available The walkin's physician was old so maybe not up to speed. They gave me nothing to treat the croup because they said the worst was over. FYI: 7-9 years ago Hospital locations that treated my older son for croup; Alameda California, Los Angeles California, Albany New York, Phoenix Arizona and Springfield MA. Pediatricians that did the same in Phoenix, AZ and Albany, NY. I don't know what to say. I used the albuterol again because that is all I had. I also used the steam in the shower. It calmed him and he could sleep. He stayed somewhat alseep for 3.5 hours and had another attack. I repeated the routine and he is sleeping again. I have been getting a lot of search hits lately for the search "Croup and Albuterol." To justify my presence on the search engines, here's my opinion on it, but first here is a disclaimer: I am not a physician. I am no longer a practicing Respiratory Therapist. Take any advice here with a huge grain of salt and remember to consult a real doctor before you make any decisions about anything. Moving on.

Croup, which we all know and love as that barky sound that kids make, is caused by swelling in the airway. The trachea and air passages are swollen and inflamed, and it makes kids feel tight and wheezy and sound scary.

Albuterol is an overprescribed Beta-2 agonist. It works very well for bronchospasm, and is sometimes used to lower serum Potassium. But that is all it does. Read this again: it is a BRONCHODILATOR. It does not cause swelling to go down: it causes the bronchioles to dilate if the muscles that control them are tightening up. I cannot emphasize enough that it does NOT reduce swelling: it simply relaxes the smooth muscles around the bronchioles.

Now, let's apply logic: bronchodilators work when someone has bronchospasm, usually asthmatic or emphesematic in nature. Croup is a problem with swelling in the airways. It is not a problem of bronchospasm, although it can cause it in asthmatic children. Albuterol will NOT....repeat, NOT...cause airway swelling to go down. Racemic Epinephrine, the usual prescription for croup, will cause airway swelling to go down.

So is it smart to use albuterol for croup? No. Unless the child with croup is asthmatic or has a history of some sort of RAD, it is unacceptable and bordering on malpractice to prescribe albuterol for croup. Racemic epinephrine and steroids will cure croup. Albuterol will not.

To conclude, I would just like to say this: the only physicians I have ever seen prescribe albuterol for croup on a routine basis have been, without exception, ignorant, old-school, unchanging buffoons who should not be practicing medicine in the first place because it's been thirty years since the bothered to read a medical journal. Seriously, these guys are the kind of doctors who are likely to order trepanning and bloodletting for headaches and infections.

Albuterol is NOT a cure-all. Do not prescribe it unless the child has asthma. It will do nothing and it will make the respiratory therapist despise you and think you are an idiot. End of discussion.

How do you get rid of croup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Depending on how severe you can sit with them in the bathroom with doors shut and shower running hot so as to steam up the bathroom and let them breath in the steam, also panadol to help calm them. They can also have warm shower with all doors and windows shut and no fan. Or if really bad a trip to the hospital where they give them a dose of a steroid medicine and if croup is recurring a doctor can prescribe the medicine for use at home. Also the steam vaporizer machines you purchase from the chemist can be used.

Can kids go to school with croup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It can be in serious cases. My mother had to take me to the emergency room when I was toddler because I almost suffocated to death from it. Most of the time is it only a cough though and will disappear in a few days to a week. Talk to your pediatrician if you are concerned about your child's symptoms.

Yes they can. It is more rare but still possible.

Also teenagers or adults who get Croup typically do not have the severe problems that babies and young children with it do. They typically simply get a cool-mist humidifier and maybe cough medication of some type.

my son is 3.5 years old & had his first croup attack when he was 11 months old & was in hosp for 3 days - Croup to my knowledge is very contagious - however as it has been explained to me - croup is a virus - not all children that come into contact with the croup virus itself will contract the croup bug - they may get a cough / runny nose etc - but not full on croup - Its as contagious as a cold - I keep my son away from pretty much everyone when he has croup - but its really the parents decision I guess - Boys are more prone as their windpipes are smaller & should grow out of it by the age of 7 - when my son is over the worst of it I always tell parents that may wish to come over etc that he has had croup & then its their call - Its a terrible virus though - I wouldn't wish it on anyone - Not so bad once U know what U are dealing with though
