The troops chocolate was melting in their backpacks so the Army commissioned Mars candy company to come up with a solution for the problem. They came up with M and M's but by that time the war was winding down so they put them on the open market. The original slogan was supposed to be melts in your mouth...not in your pack. For the civilian offering they changed it to melts in your mouth, not in your hand.
