It was kind of rough for most parts. Many buildings burned, cars being stolen and stripped, widespread drug use and gang wars were common. By the late 1980's, the Bronx became a much better place with rebuilt and new housing, lower crime rates and neighborhood revitalization.
The rules are fairly clear about the use of cameras. You may bring cameras on to the grounds. "Non-commercial photography, for personal use only is allowed, but tripods are restricted in some exhibits". The zoo staff does have the authority to use their judgment to limit the use of cameras, if they deem it necessary for the welfare of the animals, and visitors alike, or for the continued smooth operation of the zoo. Also any commercial filming or photography has to be scheduled in advance with the Zoo's Communications Department. Something interesting, you may be videotaped or photographed during your visit, by the zoo staff, the Wildlife Conservation Society employees, or other authorized personal, and purchase of the admission ticket to the zoo will cover permission for any use of your image by these parties. As the Bronx at that time was nearly completely uninhabited except for Jonas Bronck and his family and his livestock, visitors who went there would say, "We're going to the Bronck's farm" like you would say, "We're going to the Mulligan's house." Later the name was shortened to the Bronx instead of the Bronck's.
